INTRODUCTION

Approximately 88% of the workforce admitted to procrastinating one to four hours in a day

What Problem are we trying to solve?

Remote work has become more common since the pandemic. IBM did a study, they found that 54% of respondents stated they want to shift to work from home indefinitely. Working remotely has both pros and cons but self-discipline and self-motivation are crucial for achieving any goal. However, there is a limit to what you can accomplish with just willpower. There’s often a disconnect between keeping up with both your career and personal goals.

Procrastination can happen very easily when nobody’s keeping tabs on them, we tend to shrug off failures with ease. That’s why many people pay for external help to ensure they can continuously achieve their goals, such as fitness trainers or nutritionists. One way to reduce procrastination is by setting goals. Tony Robbins, a world-famous motivational speaker, and coach suggested that: “Setting goals is the first step from turning the invisible to visible.”

THE SOLUTION

I designed a productivity app that lets users reach their goals through social contracts with their friends as accountability partners. Combing a gamification aspect, users will get rewarded by their accountability partners once they have achieved their goals. Users can also browse other users’ goals to keep themselves motivated and discover new challenges crafted by wellness coaches with behavioral science research

PROJECT GOALS

  • Gain insights into people’s motivation factors while working-from-home

  • Find out what people think about working from home vs. in an office

  • Discover popular goals and habits that people tend to have but can’t seem to track and stick to

  • Learn how competitors try to solve similar challenges

APPROACH

DESK RESEARCH

I looked into goal-setting theory and behavioral science research conducted by well-known social psychology professors.

Statistics have found that having an accountability partner can increase the productivity success rate by 95%, and at the same time maintain a positive relationship

MARKET RESEARCH

Competitor Analysis

To analyze and compare the service and features that are out in the market, I started by browsing different channels and tools that involve goal setting, I then listed the strengths and weaknesses of all competitors in a separate report.

USER RESEARCH

User Interviews

I conducted 1-on-1 User interviews to gain insights into users’ pain, frustrations, needs, and motivation, as well as understand a broader scale regarding goal setting and maintaining habits to achieve goals.

Interview objectives

  • To gain insights into people’s views on self-motivation while working independently

  • To find out what people think about their productivity independently vs surrounded by motivated people

  • To find out what are the popular goals that people have in mind but hard to keep track of

Insights to Needs

  • Having an accountability partner can benefit users to accomplish their goals
All participants think having an accountability partner will increase the chances to achieve their goals

  • A gamified experience can enhance the user’s engagement to accomplish and maintain their goals
All participants think gamification could potentially be a good way to accomplish the goals

  • Both simple and complex routine tasks are needed in order for the users to maintain a healthy lifestyle while working from home
All participants find it hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic due to various reasons such as taking breaks away from the desk, stress eating, working over-time, and lack of motivation

  • 50% of participants mentioned that working remotely tends to lead to longer hours of work than usual

  • A mobile app would be a handy tool to set goals and keep a record of productivity
75% of participants use productivity apps such as Trello, Notion, Apple Fitness

  • Progress checking and tangible rewards can help with goal accomplishments
75% of participants mentioned not being able to foresee the outcome was part of the frustration, which can lead to doubting themselves and imposter feelings
50% of participants mentioned rewards can keep people engaging, e.g. closing progress rings, getting badges and trophies with Apple Fitness/taekwondo class

  • Social interaction is important for accountability partners to keep tabs on each other
75% of participants mentioned that they had a mentor to help them to accomplish that goal

  • Goal/habits settings must be flexible to avoid unwanted pressure that leads to giving up/bounce
50% of participants mentioned rewards can keep people engaging, e.g. closing progress rings, getting badges and trophies with Apple Fitness/taekwondo class

User Persona

After synthesizing my research and with insights from user interviews, I created a persona to reflect our users.

To help myself to vision the process of Megan’s goal setting, pain, gains, and needs. I created a user journey to highlight the key features of Megan’s behavior.

User Journey

  1. How might we assist Megan to establish some healthy habits in her routine in a delightful way?

  2. How might we help Megan to look for accountability partners easily within the app?

  3. How might we help Megan to keep engaged throughout this journey?

HOW MIGHT WE

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

I mapped out the information architecture to define the overall structure content and to ensure that the user flow makes sense for users to navigate.

LOW FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

With my learnings, persona, and information architecture in mind, I studied different design patterns and quickly worked on low-fidelity wireframe options to visualize possible outcomes. Based on different options, I selected the strongest ones for high -fidelity wireframes.

UI TOOLKIT

I wanted to create a fresh and energetic brand image in order to make it more appealing towards younger audience.

SOLUTIONS

1.SIMPLE SET-UP PROCESS

After walkthrough screens, 3 quick steps to get started

  • Set a goal

  • Choose 3 accountability partners

  • Pre-commit to a goal

2. JOBS TO BE DONE

  • Effortlessly add habits to your routine

  • Intuitive flow to manage habits

  • Flexible habit settings

3. SOCIAL SHARING

  • One tap to mark habits as complete

  • Option to share achievements to get tangible rewards from accountability partners

4. TRACK PROGRESS

  • To be able to foresee the outcome

  • Check other’s productivity to boost motivation

USABILITY TESTING & REVISIONS

Number of participants: 14

THE RESULTS

  • 100% success rate for all tasks

  • 55 seconds is the average time to complete all tasks

  • 0% give-up/bounce rate

  • 8/10 is the average score for the overall experience

Positive Comments

  • "I like how there's a difference between "anytime this week" and more set habits with specific days or times.

  • “I do like the simplicity of the bottom nav bar with only home, journal, and circle".

  • "I think sharing the achievement is nice! "

Problems and concerns

  • "If the setting of the routines can be more flexible will be better"

  • "It took me a second to find progress via 'journal', I expected it to be named something more concrete (track habits, results, check my calendar, etc)"

  • “I don't love that it says "Journal" and then you click on it and it says "Your Journey", I would keep that consistent!”

FINAL FLOW

LEARNINGS

This was my first solo end-to-end mobile app which I worked on as part of the google certification course. I started this project without knowing exactly how and what the solution would be. But taking the help of my design mentor, gave me the freedom to think outside the box to find the most user-centric solution. I was deeply passionate about this problem space - goal setting in behavioral science, it is such an insightful subject, as a remote learning student. This project taught me how to use my findings to strategize with an MVP, and prioritize what I should be focusing on in order to achieve the best results. The importance of micro copy such as labeling buttons to help users to navigate effortlessly, which I would always bear in mind in the future. Also, it provided me with a good opportunity to understand iOS Human Interface Guidelines and practice my design skills.
