Company : Bambini Health
Bambini Health Inc. is a health technology start-up that provides evidence-based menu planning for food suppliers, schools, parents, and children including food nutrition breakdown at the macro level, intuitive meal decision-making and payment for parents, and a gamified app to encourage children and teens to make proactive choices in eating healthfully.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Childhood obesity is a serious health problem in the United States where 1 in 5 children is affected.
What Problem are we trying to solve?
Overweight and obesity is a result of a sustained energy imbalance, where the amount of energy a child consumes through eating and drinking exceeds the energy they expend through physical activity and bodily functions. This increases a child’s risk of poor physical health and mental health which is also a risk factor for illness and mortality in adulthood.
Many of the lifestyle and behavioral choices linked to obesity emerge during the school years, as children spend a significant portion of their day in school. A child's dietary intake and physical activity levels at school significantly determine their body weight.
Childhood obesity is not just a health issue but an equity issue, with many vulnerable populations and low-income students relying on free or reduced school breakfasts and lunches as vital sources of nutrition.
Why are we trying to solve this?
PROJECT GOALS
Engage parents in monitoring their children's nutritional progress and provide them with ongoing support for healthy eating habits.
Inform and involve parents in the food choices available to their children at school by collaborating with school administrators on cafeteria menu planning.
Include parents in the effort to source healthier food options for schools and food providers.
Make nutrition education interactive and enjoyable for children through interactive learning activities and fun games.

APPROACH
Bambini was selected as a finalist in the Innovate Children Challenge-2 and also in the Opportunity Project, a competition organized by the United States Federal Government, where I had the opportunity to participate as a speaker and present our designs to the panel. The video of the presentation will be available on the U.S. Census Bureau’s YouTube channel on February 23rd.

DESK RESEARCH
The increasing consumption of processed foods high in fat, sugar, and salt in school meals is believed to be a contributing factor to the childhood obesity epidemic in America. With children spending a significant portion of their day in school and consuming up to 50% of their calories there, the food choices and physical activity habits developed during school-age years play a crucial role in determining their body weight.
Why should schools provide healthy meals?
How do healthy school meals benefit children?
As children's bodies and brains continue to develop, it is essential to provide them with early and repeated positive experiences with healthy foods in order to promote healthy food preferences. Implementing healthy and balanced school lunch programs has been shown to improve students' physical and academic well-being. These programs have been linked to reduced aggression, hyperactivity, and other behavioral issues and breaking cycles of poor health in low-income children. Additionally, healthy school lunches can play a crucial role in reversing childhood obesity trends, which have been linked to chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more productive future for the next generation.
How do school meals reach the kids?
Stakeholders
Through our desk research identified four key stakeholders who play a role in determining meal choices and nutritional guidance for children who eat school meals
1.Parents
2. Children
3. Schools
4. Food suppliers
Deeper look into the lunch system
In the United States, the majority of educational institutions utilize one of two predominant catering systems. Both systems have their respective advantages and disadvantages. Despite these differences, a commonality exists in that parents are frequently unaware of the specific food their children are consuming while at school and are unable to confirm that adequate nutrition is being provided on a daily basis. To obtain information regarding the food offered, parents must either contact the school cafeteria directly or visit the school's website, if available.
MARKET RESEARCH
Competitor Analysis
Utilizing the previously mentioned research as a foundation, our team conducted an analysis of the top five most widely utilized school meal applications for both schools and parents. Our analysis revealed that a majority of the apps primarily focused on meal payments and digital menus.
Survey
USER RESEARCH
To gather further insights, we conducted a survey and collected over 200 responses from parents. The following are some of the key findings from the survey data
Interviews
To gain a deeper understanding of the pain points associated with school meal programs, we conducted in-depth interviews with 20 parents who participated in our survey. Here are some of the sample questions we have asked them:
1.Are you satisfied with the quality and variety of food options offered in the school meal program?
2. How easy is it for you to access information about the school meal program, such as menus and nutritional information?
3. How easy is it for you to make payments for school meals?
4. Are you able to access the school meal program regardless of financial constraints?
5. Are there any specific concerns or suggestions you have for improvements to the school meal program?
6. How do you think the school meal program can be more effectively communicated to parents?
7. Are you satisfied with the availability of healthy food options for your child?
8. Are you happy with the way the program is implemented and executed?
9. Are you satisfied with the cost of the school meal program?
10. Do you think the school meal program helps in promoting the health and well-being of your child?
Insights from Parents
The Limited nutritional information in current school lunch apps makes it difficult for parents to make informed decisions about their child's diet.
Lack of educational resources and activities on nutrition in school misses an opportunity for children to be educated on healthy eating habits.
Limited engagement between parents and schools it difficult for them to be involved in cafeteria menu planning and sourcing healthier food options for their children.
Not many customization options in school lunch apps, such as the ability to make special requests for food allergies or dietary restrictions, makes it difficult for them to ensure their child's dietary needs are met.
Analytics in current school lunch apps make it difficult for them to track their child's meals and monitor their dietary needs.
Limited accessibility in school lunch apps makes it difficult for certain parents to access the app and stay informed about their child's meals.
Lack of integration capabilities in school lunch apps make it difficult for them to manage and track their child's meal data.
User Persona
Using the information gathered from our survey and interviews, we have created a user persona that represents the goals and needs of the majority of parents.
User Journey
To gain a deeper insight into their goals, pain points, gains, and needs, I created a user journey that maps out Sara and her children's experience from the moment they opt for school lunch to when they return home from school
Children may not have the knowledge to make informed choices about their school lunch options.
It can be challenging for parents to understand what their children are eating for lunch at school, as children may not always be truthful about their choices or may not remember what they ate.
Additionally, parents may not have all the information about nutrition and may struggle to educate their children about healthy food choices.
Pain Points
HOW MIGHT WE
How might we make it easier for parents to know what their children are eating at school?
How might we increase the transparency of the school meal options and their nutritional value?
How might we involve parents in the decision-making process for school meals?
How might we make it easier for parents to communicate with the school about their children's meals?
How might we empower children to make healthier food choices at school?
How might we educate children about nutrition in a fun and engaging way?
USER FLOW
In order to optimize the user experience, we created a detailed user flow to visualize the navigation and necessary features within the app. With this in mind, we also carefully considered accessibility and the options available to users on each tab while mapping out the app's functionality
LOW FIDELITY WIREFRAMES
By considering my research findings, user persona, and information architecture, I explored various design patterns and rapidly developed low-fidelity wireframe options to visualize potential solutions. After evaluating multiple options, the team selected the most promising ones to develop into high-fidelity wireframes.
INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
We constructed the information architecture to organize the content and ensure that the navigation is intuitive and logical for users.
MOODBOARD
We utilized a vibrant color scheme, incorporating various color options and playful typography, as it is appropriate for a school application.
UI TOOLKIT
USER TESTING
Shown her are only some of the changes that were made*
In order to evaluate the effectiveness and usability of our application, we conducted user testing on Zoom with a sample group of 20 parents. The purpose of this testing was to gather feedback on areas of improvement and make necessary revisions. Through this process, we completed approximately 3 rounds of iteration before finalizing the application
